What it does
Gives body mass index plus two weight estimates nurses use for dosing: ideal body weight (Devine) and adjusted body weight.
The formulas
BMI = weight kg ÷ (height m)². IBW (men) = 50 + 2.3 × (inches over 60); women start at 45.5. ABW = IBW + 0.4 × (actual − IBW).
Worked example
An 80 kg man at 170 cm: BMI 27.7, IBW about 65.9 kg, ABW about 71.6 kg.
Good to know
The combined tool uses adult BMI categories for ages 20+ and the Devine estimate for heights of at least 5 ft. The 0.4 adjusted-weight model is not applied when actual weight is at or below IBW. Whether it is appropriate for a calculation depends on the reference and protocol.
