What it does
Converts an oxytocin order in milliunits per minute into an infusion pump rate in mL/hr.
The formulas
concentration mU/mL = (units in bag × 1000) ÷ mL; rate mL/hr = (ordered mU/min × 60) ÷ concentration.
Worked example
30 units in 500 mL is 60 mU/mL. An order of 6 mU/min: (6 × 60) ÷ 60 = 6 mL/hr.
Good to know
Titration follows the labor protocol and the fetal and contraction pattern.
Study calculations only, not dosing recommendations. Real medication orders and administration require the appropriate clinical checks and facility protocol.
