What it does
Finds the loading and maintenance pump rates for a magnesium sulfate order.
The formulas
concentration g/mL = grams in bag ÷ mL; maintenance mL/hr = ordered g/hr ÷ concentration; loading volume = loading grams ÷ concentration, given over the ordered minutes.
Worked example
20 g in 500 mL is 0.04 g/mL. Maintenance 2 g/hr: 2 ÷ 0.04 = 50 mL/hr. A 4 g load is 100 mL; over 20 minutes that is 300 mL/hr.
Good to know
Magnesium needs close monitoring for toxicity; follow your protocol.
Study calculations only, not dosing recommendations. Real medication orders and administration require the appropriate clinical checks and facility protocol.
