What it does
Practices the classic 4 mL/kg/%TBSA Parkland model for 24-hour lactated Ringer’s volume and its two time periods. This is a study model, not a treatment recommendation.
The formula
Classic study model: total mL = 4 × weight kg × %TBSA burned. Allocate half to the first 8 hours measured from burn time and half to the following 16 hours. The displayed rates assume the full time periods are available.
Worked example
A 70 kg patient with 30% TBSA: 4 × 70 × 30 = 8400 mL. First 8 hours 4200 mL (525 mL/hr), next 16 hours 4200 mL (262.5 mL/hr).
Good to know
Only partial- and full-thickness burns count toward this model’s TBSA. The tool does not calculate catch-up rates or subtract fluid already given. The 2024 American Burn Association guideline recommends a 2 mL/kg/%TBSA starting estimate for adults with burns of at least 20% TBSA. Use the model specified in your study question; actual resuscitation requires clinical titration.
Study calculations only, not dosing recommendations. Real medication orders and administration require the appropriate clinical checks and facility protocol.
